Petroleum Geology is the search for oil. Since the completion of the first commercial oil well in 1859, geologists have been diligently seeking the next great play. Wellsite Geology places the geologist at the point of discovery.
Wellsite geologists are a key part of exploration and development drilling.
Wellsite Geology is an interdisciplinary science, grounded in geology, which includes every aspect of the drilling process.
On site functions performed by our geologists include:
- Daily reporting
- Geosteering
- Gas detection
- Sample cuttings preparation and description
- Supervision and description of cores
- Electronic log and DST evaluation

Geosteering is the science of determining the true vertical depth (TVD) of the target formation for the purpose of landing the curve within the targeted porosity interval and maximizing lateral exposure to the ideal reservoir. In looking out for the interest of the operator, the geologist continuously monitors and judiciously adjusts the TVD target to ensure a perfect landing within the chosen pay zone. In the lateral, geologists study the signatures of the bounding beds, calculate formation dip and determine wellbore position within the target.
The geology team works closely with additional onsite personnel to make effective steering decisions. Geologists from Sunburst Consulting, Inc. consider multiple factors such as gamma signatures, MWD-survey data, sample cuttings, hydrocarbon shows, penetration rates, isopach data and offset logs, using cutting-edge proprietary spreadsheets. The geology team utilizes all of these factors to make steering proposals, guide directional drillers' efforts, and adjust for dip changes and faults, as necessary. Daily reports include the percentage of exposure to the target, formation dip rate, hydrocarbon shows, basic drilling data, and highly detailed geosteering logs. This report can be customized to your specifications.

Sunburst Consulting, Inc. uses state-of-the-art digital gas detection equipment, which measures total gas and five main hydrocarbon components including methane, ethane, propane, normal butane and iso-butane. Certain non-hydrocarbon gases can be quantified as well. The data are then transferred to a well log where they can be correlated with other aspects of the well such as penetration rate and gamma counts. We also can provide lagged hydrocarbon data available in real time via a secure remote log in on this web site for your convenience.

Geologists from Sunburst Consulting, Inc. provide a well evaluation as part of the Geology Report that accompanies each well. The Geology Report is an illustrated compendium of events that occurred during the drilling of the well with a focus on the geology of the prospect or field area. It includes daily activity, structure, offset control, bit record, e-log report, core report, DST report, water saturation calculations, etc. Photographs of significant cuttings or core samples are often included.
